Good news for the residents of the Township of Brock. The Durham Region and the Township have announced that the Good Doctor will be opening a telemedicine clinic in Beaverton. The clinic will be available by appointments to those without a family doctor. The clinic will be open three days a week and will be located at the Lakeview Manor and will have an office with a separate entrance. The clinic is scheduled to open before the end of 2024.
The Good Doctor has been serving communities across Ontario since 2015 and is covered by OHIP. The way people of Ontario buy alcohol is set to change later this week. On Thursday, over 4,000 licensed convenience stores across the province will officially be allowed to sell beer, cider, wine and other ready-to-drink cocktails. The plan released by the provincial government was originally scheduled to come into effect by 2026. However, earlier this summer, the plan was moved up to September 5th of this year.
The expansion of alcohol sales into convenience stores and other grocery stores fulfills a pledge that the Ford government ran on in the 2018 election campaign. Canada’s Transportation Minister, Pablo Rodriguez, says he’s going to get to the bottom of a delay that stranded VIA Rail passengers for over 10 hours in Quebec over the long weekend. VIA Rail said in a statement that passengers were stuck on Saturday when a train broke down between Montreal and Quebec City after experiencing two consecutive mechanical issues. VIA Rail also said that there were no buses available to offer passengers alternative transportation. A meeting will be held later this week between VIA Rail leadership and Rodriguez to discuss the issue.

“You know, we do it because we want to honor all those that have fought cancer, all those that fight cancer, and all those that have survived. And at the same time, you know, it’s important to celebrate them. And that’s why we do it, is we want to celebrate all those that, you know, never give up and know that anything is possible if you try. Over 40 years, residents across Georgina have raised more than $768,000 for cancer research.”
Along with declaring July 28th Terry Fox Day, the town of Georgina has named a 3.8 acre park near Woodbine and Old Homestead Road after Terry Fox. An arbitrator has awarded Ontario physicians a 10% pay increase for the first year of their future contract. Currently the Ontario government and the Ontario Medical Association are in negotiations on a four-year contract. However, the arbitrator was instructed to set the pay increase for the first year of the deal while the two sides hammer out the rest of the contract. The OMA originally wanted a 5% pay increase plus 10% for inflation catch-up. The Ontario government counted with 3%. The arbitrator said that the 3% that the government was offering is unrealistic since it is very close to what the nurses were awarded and nurses don’t have to worry about the overhead cost of running a practice.

As part of the Ontario government’s plan, they cut a check to the beer store for $225 million to help secure jobs, according to Doug Ford. The Ontario Liberals were not happy with that, saying that the funds could be allocated elsewhere and accused the provincial government of rushing the expansion of alcohol sales for no reason. The Ontario Liberals, with the backing of the Green Party, have now asked the province’s Financial Accountability Officer to investigate the decision, which the Financial Accountability Officer has agreed to do.

It was somewhat of a positive fiscal year for Ontario. Yesterday, Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy and Treasury Board President Caroline Mulroney released the numbers and it was almost a balanced budget for the province. The original projected deficit was $1.3 billion. Ontario did finish in the red but at a much lower number, coming in at $600 million. Revenues were up by $1.6 billion from what was expected at the time of the budget release, largely due to the revenue brought in from international student tuition. That was offset by the fact that Ontario brought in less money when it came to taxed revenue. Canadians will not be headed to the polls this fall after all.
With politicians back in Ottawa, Conservative Leader Pierre Poliève announced that he was going to table a non-confidence motion in hopes of triggering a carbon tax election. Yesterday, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also voiced his support for the Liberals, despite pulling out of the supply and confidence agreement last month.

Orange has a new landing pad. The Provincial Healthcare Transportation Service will be using a new helipad built in East Gwillimbury for landings and takeoffs. The one-year pilot project helps replace the helipad lost when the Buttonville Airport was closed down. Jeremy Watts, the Acting Chief of Paramedic Services in the York Region, says that the new site near Davis Drive and Woodbine will serve many. Orange is able to actually land, whether it be for connecting with some of our crews through 911 calls that require rapid transport, or also better access for patients of Southlake, either entering some of the specialty programs there that are coming from areas north of here, or for patients that require transport. The new helipad is built in an industrial area where York Region has centred many of its northern services, including paramedics and police.
New Liberal Ontario leader Bonnie Crombie took a verbal shot at Premier Doug Ford in a campaign style speech over the weekend, saying that under the Ford government, the people of Ontario are surviving, not thriving. The controversial law was passed through legislation back in September of 2022, bypassing public hearings. So far, there is no publicly known date as to when the decision on this case will be made.

Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Polliève continued his quest to try to bring down the Liberal government. A second non-confidence motion was tabled by the official opposition in the House of Commons, just one day after the first motion was defeated 211-120, largely due to the NDP and Bloc Québécois standing with the Liberal government. The new motion blames the current government for the doubled cost of housing, taxed food, punished work and the high crime rate. A successful vote of non-confidence would send Canadians to the polls in the fall. The vote on this motion is scheduled for Tuesday next week.

The Ontario government has been facing scrutiny since Premier Doug Ford announced that his government would look into tunnelling under the 401 to help fight congestion in the Greater Toronto Area. Many people on social media asked what the point of tunnelling under the 401 was when the privately owned 407 was just sitting there hardly ever used. The Premier was asked that very question over the weekend and responded by saying that the provincial government did consider buying back the privately owned highway before making the announcement of the 401 project in the coming years. Ford proceeded to say that his confidence in the plan to tunnel under the 401 to build an express highway and public transit was at an all-time high.

In the most recent federal budget, only $91 million have been put aside over the next two years.
