York Regional Police have charged a 47-year-old Whitchurch-Stouffville man after a missing youth was safely found at a local home in April. Christopher Conlon is facing several charges, including human trafficking and luring a child.

Police said the investigation also involves offences related to child sexual abuse and exploitation material. The charges have not been proven in court.

Police believe there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Information can be shared with the York Regional Police Counter Exploitation Unit or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

York Region residents gathered in Richmond Hill on Aug. 27 for an annual vigil to remember people who have died from drug poisoning and overdose. Families, friends and community members came together to honour their loved ones and share memories.

Today (August 31st) is International Overdose Awareness Day, York Regional Police marked it by raising awareness about drug overdoses and highlighting harm reduction and recovery resources in York Region through September, National Recovery Awareness Month.

The vigil offered a chance for the community to remember those lost and remind those affected that they are not alone. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, YRP highlighted their partnered organizations; CAYR Community Connections, The Farm Rehab, John Howard Society of York Region, Vitanova Foundation and Addiction Services Central Ontario.

Aurora Town Square is celebrating its second anniversary this September with a month-long lineup of music, dance, food, art, movies and family-friendly activities. The celebration will bring residents together throughout the month with a variety of events designed to showcase the community and offer something for all ages.

One of the major highlights will be the Multicultural Festival on Sept. 19. The event will feature food, performances and activities representing cultures from around the world, giving residents an opportunity to enjoy and learn more about the diversity of the community.

The month-long celebration will conclude on Sept. 30 with events marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The activities will provide an opportunity for the community to reflect, learn and honour the experiences and history of Indigenous peoples.

Emergency crews responded to an aircraft crash in a wooded area near County Road 9, close to the village of Creemore in Clearview Township. Huronia West OPP were called to the scene shortly after 4:20 Saturday afternoon.

Police say the aircraft operator, a 46-year-old man from Clearview Township, was taken to a local hospital before being airlifted by Ornge to a Toronto-area trauma centre. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening.

Transport Canada has been notified and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the crash is asked to contact Huronia West OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can be provided through Crime Stoppers.

Lake Drive at De La Salle Park is closed as York Regional Police investigate an incident in Georgina. Police say the closure is expected to remain in place while officers continue their investigation.

York Regional Police report that one person was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries. There are no further details available at this time regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident or the condition of the injured person.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and use an alternate route while the investigation continues. Police have not indicated when Lake Drive will reopen, and further information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

Yonge Street in Holland Landing has partially reopened to traffic today as revitalization work continues. The section between Mount Albert Road and Bradford Street/Thompson Drive is now open to motorists.

The portion between Bradford Street/Thompson Drive and Doane Road will remain closed until October 2. Officials say the closure is needed for safety reasons while crews complete culvert installation work in the area.

Residents are being thanked for their patience and understanding as the project continues. Drivers are reminded to follow posted signs and plan for possible delays.

Members of Georgina Council, Town staff and the Jackson’s Point BIA recently gathered at the revitalized Jackson’s Point Parkette to recognize the BIA’s $15,000 contribution toward the project.

The improvements include wider, accessible walkways, upgraded lighting, new seating areas and refreshed landscaping. The updates are designed to make the parkette easier to access and more comfortable for everyone.

Barrie residents will have a chance Thursday to comment on a proposal for two 20-storey apartment towers at 306 Yonge Street in the city’s south end. The project would include 388 rental units, commercial space, parking and outdoor areas.

An online neighbourhood meeting is scheduled for Aug. 27 from 5 to 6 p.m. Residents can learn more about the proposal and share their comments.

More public meetings and city approvals will be needed before the project can move ahead with construction.

The Town of Newmarket’s redesigned website has won two gold awards at the international dotCOMM Awards. The site was recognized in the “Redesign” and “Government” categories for being easier to use, more accessible and making information and services easier to find.

The website update is part of the Town’s ongoing work to improve its online services. The goal is to make it easier for residents to find information and access Town services online.

Mayor John Taylor said the awards recognize the Town’s efforts to improve its digital presence and provide better online services for the community.

The 2026 Mayor’s Motorcycle Ride and Poker Run will take place Saturday, Sept. 12, starting at the Pefferlaw Lions Hall. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the ride leaving at 10 a.m.

Participants will follow the ride route before finishing at the Sutton Legion, where a barbecue and prizes will be held. The event offers a chance for local riders and passengers to enjoy a day together while supporting a community cause.

The cost is $30 for riders and $20 for passengers. All proceeds will go to Sutton Legion Branch #356.

The world continues to react as an announcement was made by Dolly Parton’s publicist early on Tuesday morning. She had passed away peacefully in Nashville at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer and other health complications. 

Tributes from celebrities, political leaders and fans were poured out throughout the day, and continue to do so, honouring the iconic country star who was also a crossover success in her musical career – and whose fame and legacy have spanned generations. 

She had still been active on tour until earlier this year, when she had to cancel a Las Vegas show with those health issues on the rise.

Police have arrested and charged a man following an investigation into at least 14 commercial break-ins in the Newmarket area. The incidents happened during the early morning hours over the past several weeks, with several businesses targeted.

Investigators carried out a search warrant at a Newmarket residence and seized cash trays and tools that police believe may be connected to the break-ins. The investigation is still ongoing, and police say there may be other businesses that were targeted.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about the break-ins to come forward. Investigators are also encouraging any business owners who believe they may have been affected to contact police.

Police have arrested and charged three adults and two youths in connection with a double homicide in Brampton. Officers were called to a shooting near Rutherford Road and Kennedy Road on April 3. An adult man and a male youth were found with gunshot wounds and later died.

The five accused were arrested between May and July. The two youths cannot be publicly identified because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police also recovered five firearms during the investigation.

All five accused remain in custody and are awaiting bail hearings. Anyone with information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205.

The Innisfil Food Bank announced it is expanding into a new space at Innisfil Community Church to provide more fresh food and essential items to families in need. 

The food bank currently helps about 500 people, but the demand to continues to grow as local families face rising costs. According to TD Economics, since 2019 grocery prices have grown over 30%. 

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. The clothing depot will be temporarily closed during the expansion. The food bank thank residents for their support.

Municipalities have now released their lists of candidates for the 2026 municipal election, giving residents an opportunity to see who is running for local council and school board positions. The candidate lists provide voters with a chance to learn more about their choices before voting begins.

Voting will take place online from Oct. 17 to 26, making it important for residents to be prepared ahead of the voting period. Voters should check that their information is up to date to ensure they receive their voting information and instructions in time for the election.

York Regional Police are reminding residents to stay alert to distraction thefts, which can happen in busy public places when thieves take advantage of a moment of inattention. Police say offenders may use quick or unexpected interactions to distract people before taking valuables.

Residents are encouraged to keep purses, wallets and other valuables with them and in front of their bodies when shopping or out in public. Valuables should never be left unattended in a vehicle or shopping cart, even for a short time.

Police also recommend staying aware of your surroundings and being cautious about strangers entering your personal space or touching you or your jewelry. A little extra awareness can help reduce the opportunity for thieves to strike.

Georgina’s next Curbside Giveaway Day is set for Saturday, Aug. 29, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., giving residents an opportunity to clear out unwanted household items while offering neighbours the chance to pick up something useful for free.

Residents can place unwanted household items at the curb during the designated hours for others to take. The initiative is intended to encourage reuse and help keep usable items out of the waste stream, while making it easier for neighbours to find items they may need.

The Town of Georgina is looking to recognize the people and organizations that give their time to help others. Nominations are now open for the 2026 Volunteer Award of Merit.

The award recognizes local volunteers, groups, teams and businesses that make a difference in the community. Nominations are open until December 31st, giving residents a chance to recognize someone who goes above and beyond.

The winners will be honoured at an event next April as part of National Volunteer Week. The awards highlight the important work volunteers do throughout the community.

A flood outlook is in effect for the Lake Simcoe watershed as heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the region today. More than 100 millimetres of rain could fall, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying areas and rapidly rising rivers and streams.

Residents are urged to use caution around waterways and avoid rivers, streams and other areas that could become flooded. Officials are reminding people to keep children and pets away from fast-moving or rising water, where conditions can change quickly.

The flood outlook is expected to remain in place until noon Tuesday. Residents should continue to monitor local weather and emergency updates and be prepared for changing conditions.

Durham Regional Police are warning residents about an increase in door-to-door scams involving suspects offering low-cost roof and chimney repairs. Officials say residents should be cautious when approached by unsolicited contractors offering unusually cheap work.

Police say suspects may damage a roof after gaining access to a home, then demand thousands of dollars for additional repairs. Residents are advised not to allow unexpected contractors onto their property and to verify a company’s credentials before agreeing to any work.

Residents should get multiple quotes from licensed and reputable contractors and avoid making rushed payments. Anyone who suspects they have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Two men are facing multiple charges following an LCBO theft investigation in Innisfil that led South Simcoe Police to recover a stolen vehicle. Police were contacted by staff at an Innisfil LCBO on August 20 after two males matching the description of suspects and a vehicle involved in an earlier theft at an LCBO in Barrie were spotted at the store.

Police say one of the males entered the LCBO, placed eight bottles of alcohol in a basket and headed toward the checkout area. When staff briefly stepped away from the register, the suspect allegedly left the store without paying. After noticing police officers outside, he abandoned the basket and attempted to flee on foot before being arrested.

The second male remained inside a Chevrolet Camaro, which police determined had been reported stolen by Peel Regional Police. The vehicle was also allegedly displaying a stolen Ontario licence plate and contained eight bottles of alcohol reported stolen from the Barrie LCBO. Police say the driver attempted to flee, reversing and accelerating into a marked police vehicle before being arrested. Both accused were taken to South Division and held for bail, facing a combined list of charges including theft, possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous operation and flight from police. Anyone with information is asked to contact South Simcoe Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Residents and nature enthusiasts will have an opportunity to learn more about the York Regional Forest during a special open house on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hollidge Tract, located at 16389 Highway 48 in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

The open house will feature information on basic hiking safety, how to properly prepare for a hike, and the plants and wildlife visitors may encounter in the forest. Guests can also take a tour of the Bill Fisch Forest Stewardship and Education Centre and learn more about the work being done to protect and manage York Region’s forests.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to take part in a short, beginner-friendly guided hike led by the Oak Ridges Trail Association. No registration is required to attend the open house, although registration is recommended for those interested in the guided hikes. More information and hike registration are available at york.ca.

A Toronto man has been charged in connection with a series of alleged indecent acts involving women in Markham this summer. Police say the incidents occurred between June 9 and August 14 near McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue.

37 year old Chong Chen is facing six counts of Indecent Act, two counts of Criminal Harassment and one count of Prowl at Night.

Investigators say five incidents have been reported and believe there may be additional victims. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine whether other incidents are connected. Police are asking anyone with information about the investigation to come forward. The allegations have not been proven in court.

A meet-and-greet for candidates in the upcoming York-Simcoe byelection will be held August 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Link in Sutton. Residents will have a chance to meet the candidates, ask questions and hear their views on issues affecting the riding.

Five candidates have registered so far, representing the Liberals, New Blue Party, NDP, Progressive Conservatives and Green Party. The event will give local residents an opportunity to learn more about the candidates before the byelection.

The meet-and-greet is open to residents and will take place at The Link in Sutton on August 26.

Karen Tindall of Tindall Farms recently joined Dan Pollard for “Tractor Talk” to talk about her experience at the Ontario Food Terminal. Tindall travels to the terminal every Thursday morning at 4 a.m., bringing her cauliflower and swapping it with other Ontario farmers for produce she does not grow, such as green beans.

Tindall says the swaps help local farmers work together and offer customers a wider selection of Ontario-grown produce. She says it is a good way for farmers to share what they grow and support one another.

The Ontario Food Terminal is Canada’s largest wholesale produce hub, distributing more than 2.1 billion pounds of produce each year. It plays an important role in connecting Ontario farmers with buyers across the province and beyond.

The OPP says David Douglas, a 73-year-old pilot who went missing after leaving Oshawa Airport on August 14 has been found dead.

Searchers located the plane and the pilot’s body submerged in Wolf Lake in the Kawartha Lakes area. Several jurisdictions worked together on the search, including Durham Regional Police, and Trenton Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.  

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the crash. No information on the cause of the crash is currently available.

York Regional Police are warning residents about a telecommunications scam after arresting a 22-year-old Markham man. Police say suspects pretend to be phone company representatives and convince victims to order new phones or other devices.

The victims are then tricked into sending the devices to the scammers. Police recovered about $40,000 worth of phones and tablets as part of the investigation.

Police believe there may be more victims across Canada and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Residents are reminded to be cautious when receiving unexpected calls or requests involving new devices or account information.

A Newmarket family and advocacy group Red Coalition Inc. are calling for an independent review after alleging that York Region Transit officers tackled and handcuffed a Black man with a disability over a $4 fare. The family says he had paid through the PRESTO app but could not explain the payment because of his disability.

York Region says the incident is under review and cannot comment further at this time. The family and advocates are asking for answers about how the situation was handled.

They are also calling for changes to transit enforcement policies and more training for staff, particularly when dealing with people with disabilities. They say the goal is to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Work is underway on Station Road and Old Homestead Road in Georgina. The project includes drainage and sidewalk improvements, as well as a new multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

The path will provide a safer connection between Station Road, the Pefferlaw River bridge, nearby neighbourhoods and York Region trails. The project is expected to be finished by fall 2026.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and use caution when travelling through construction zones.

A Southern Georgian Bay OPP officer is facing six criminal charges following an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The allegations involve three women and are said to have taken place between August 2024 and October 2025.

Constable Zahid Javed has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and three counts of breach of trust. He was released with conditions, including no contact with the affected individuals.

Javed is scheduled to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Midland on September 10. The SIU says it will not comment further while the case is before the courts.

Construction on the Mill Gate Dog Park in Beaverton is set to begin next Monday, with the work expected to be finished by the end of August. The park will have separate areas for large and small dogs, along with double gates for added safety.

Benches, picnic tables and garbage bins will be added later. Brock Township says the project is moving ahead this year, with an $8,241.75 budget shortfall covered by the Tax Rate Stabilization Reserve.

Residents are asked to use caution around the area while construction is underway. Once finished, the park will give local dogs and their owners a new place to play and spend time outdoors.

The Town of Georgina is upgrading the playground at Holmes Point Park, replacing aging equipment with a new accessible play area for children ages five to 12.

The project will improve access from the parking lot and add ramps to the main play structure, along with a range of accessible features. The existing junior play area and swings will remain in place.

Construction and restoration work is expected to take place between September and October, with the new playground scheduled to be completed in October.

A member of the Bogart family is working to preserve the history of Bogarttown and the historic Bogart House on Leslie Street in Newmarket. The 1811 home is an important part of the area’s early history and has remained a reminder of the community’s roots as development continues around it.

The house is expected to be restored as part of the planned Bogart Hills townhouse development. However, restoration work has not yet begun, leaving the historic property awaiting the next stage of the development and preservation plans.

Family members are also hoping to search the property for historic artifacts before construction gets underway. They say the search could help uncover items that offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived in Bogarttown and add to the story of the historic site.

Georgina residents can register for the Town’s fall recreation and culture programs beginning at 8:30 a.m. today. A variety of programs and activities will be available for residents looking to stay active, learn something new or take part in local recreation this fall.

Residents are encouraged to log into their online accounts before registration opens and make sure their contact information is up to date. Saving programs to a wish list in advance can also help make the registration process quicker and easier when spots become available.

East Gwillimbury residents are being asked to help choose a new public art piece for Carnaby Park. Three designs are up for a vote, with themes including Canadian history, the monarch butterfly and the connection between people and the land.

Voting is open until September 1. Residents can choose the design they would like to see installed in the park.

The winning artwork will become a permanent feature at Carnaby Park.

The OPP is warning vendors about a scam targeting people trying to book spaces at local fairs and community events. Police say someone recently sent money by e-transfer to an email address claiming to represent the Elmvale Fall Fair, only to be asked for more money.

Police are reminding vendors to be careful when making payments for event spaces. They say people should confirm that payment requests are legitimate before sending any money.

Vendors are being urged to check official event websites or social media pages to verify payment information and contact event organizers directly if they are unsure.

A new trail connecting Memorial Park to the Stouffville-Rouge trail network is now open, giving residents a new route into the Rouge National Urban Park. The connection provides easier access to the growing network of trails for walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts.

The project received about $1.5 million in funding from York Region, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Parks Canada. The Town of Stouffville also contributed around $441,000 toward the project.

Town officials say the work is part of a broader effort to expand local trails and improve connections between Stouffville and surrounding green spaces. The town plans to continue working on another trail gap linking Stouffville with the Rouge.

Louis Foster will lead the field to the green flag for the inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham after setting a new track record in qualifying Saturday. The second-year NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver posted a time of 1:13.2383 around the new 12-turn, 2.1-mile temporary street circuit, earning his second career pole position. Foster, driving Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s No. 45 Honda, was four-tenths of a second faster than Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard, who will start second.

Foster had already shown strong pace earlier in the day, posting the third-fastest time in morning practice before topping the afternoon session. He says he has been eager to earn a pole on a street circuit and now has an opportunity to claim his first INDYCAR victory in Sunday’s 90-lap race. Foster will also have an extra set of the faster Firestone alternate tires, potentially giving him a strategic advantage in what is expected to be a two-stop race. The race gets underway at noon Sunday.

The top six on the starting grid will include Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin in third, Marcus Ericsson fourth, rookie Dennis Hauger fifth and Rinus VeeKay sixth. Championship leader Alex Palou had a rare qualifying mistake, hitting both sides of the wall at Turn 10 and ending his session early. Palou will start 12th but maintains a 110-point lead in the championship standings. Meanwhile, former series champion Josef Newgarden will start at the back of the 25-car field after crashing heavily into the Turn 10 wall late in qualifying.

The Town of Georgina is celebrating the community’s rich agricultural heritage today with its annual Field to Table farm tour. The award-winning, self-guided event takes place Saturday, August 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., giving residents and visitors the opportunity to explore local farms, meet farmers and discover products grown and produced right here in Georgina.

The tour features participating farms across Georgina, offering a variety of authentic farm experiences, including opportunities to explore the land, learn more about local agriculture and sample delicious food made with fresh, locally grown products. The event has been held since 2018 as part of Georgina’s celebration of more than 200 years of agriculture and the important role local farms continue to play in the community.

There’s also a chance to visit and win during the tour. Each unique stamp collected at participating stops earns an entry into a draw for a gift basket filled with fresh goods from local farmers. And K Country 93.7’s Dan Pollard will be broadcasting live from Homestead Orchards from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., bringing listeners the sights and sounds of Field to Table. Visitors can submit their completed stamp card at their final stop or take a photo and email it to tourism@georgina.ca.

The York Regional Police Association is offering condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of three Canadian police officers who died over a three-day period. The officers served with the Hamilton Police Service, Durham Regional Police Service and RCMP.

The association said the deaths are a loss for police services and communities across the country. It is standing with those who are grieving and remembering the officers’ service.

The association also reminded police officers and other first responders to support one another and seek help when needed during difficult times.

York Region Public Health has detected West Nile virus in a mosquito trap near Main Street and Tenth Line in Stouffville, marking the second positive test in the area in less than a week. The detections are prompting a reminder for residents to take precautions during mosquito season.

There are currently no confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in the community. Public Health is encouraging residents to reduce mosquito breeding areas around their properties by removing standing water from items such as containers, planters and other outdoor fixtures.

Residents are also advised to use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and long pants when spending time outdoors, particularly when mosquitoes are active. Officials say taking simple precautions can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites and the spread of West Nile virus.

Jackson’s Point Parkette has received a series of improvements aimed at making the community space more accessible, comfortable and welcoming. The work includes wider accessible walkways, upgraded lighting, new seating areas and refreshed landscaping.

The revitalized parkette also features Adirondack chairs, providing residents and visitors with a place to relax and enjoy the outdoor space. With the improvements now complete, the parkette is open and ready to be enjoyed by the community.

The Town thanked the Jackson’s Point BIA and others who helped make the improvements possible. The project adds a refreshed gathering space for residents and visitors to enjoy in the heart of Jackson’s Point.

GO Transit’s Barrie Line will see major service changes from August 15 to 20 as crews carry out track upgrades. The work will affect train service at several points during the week.

There will be no GO train service on August 15 and 16, with buses replacing trains. On August 17, service will be limited between Maple and Union stations.

Riders are encouraged to check GO Transit schedules before travelling and allow extra time for their trips. Regular service is expected to return on August 21.

Southlake Health is planning major changes to expand health-care services across the region. The plans include a new hospital in East Gwillimbury, along with new care centres in Georgina and Bradford.

The Newmarket hospital on Davis Drive will remain a full-service hospital, with its emergency department, surgeries and cancer care. Southlake also plans upgrades to the existing hospital as part of the long-term changes.

Southlake says the plans will take many years to complete. The community will continue to receive updates as the plans move forward and more details become available.

Georgina Fire and Rescue Services firefighters recently took part in hands-on training focused on safely removing people from damaged vehicles. The training gave crews a chance to practise the skills they may need during a serious collision.

Firefighters worked through rescue scenarios to improve their teamwork and prepare for the challenges of helping people trapped in vehicles. Regular practice helps crews stay prepared for different emergency situations.

Ongoing training helps ensure Georgina firefighters can respond quickly and safely when the community needs them.

York Regional Police are reminding people heading to the Honda Indy in Markham this weekend to leave their drones at home. A strict no-fly zone will be in place over the race venue, with police teams monitoring the area for unauthorized drone activity.

Police say anyone caught operating a drone in the restricted area could face fines. The warning comes as large crowds are expected to attend the event, with officials emphasizing the importance of keeping the airspace clear and the venue safe.

Visitors are being asked to follow the restrictions and enjoy the race from the ground. For those looking for aerial views of the action, police say that job is best left to the authorized TV crews covering the event.

Protesters will gather in Newmarket on Aug. 29 to voice concerns about the policies of Premier Doug Ford’s government, with this month’s rally focusing on education cuts. Organizers say Ontario schools need more funding to provide students and educators with the support they need.

The organizers are calling for greater investment in public education, while the provincial government says it is making record investments in the sector. The issue has become a point of ongoing debate as communities across Ontario discuss the state of local schools and education services.

The Newmarket protest will begin at 1 p.m. at Yonge Street and Sawmill Valley Drive. Organizers say similar rallies are planned in communities across Ontario, giving residents an opportunity to voice their concerns about education funding and other provincial policies.

The Town of Georgina is asking residents to share their thoughts on the 2027 municipal budget and how tax dollars should be spent. The public can complete an online survey from Aug. 11 to Oct. 3, giving residents an opportunity to identify the services and priorities that matter most to them.

As part of the consultation, the Town has also introduced a new tool that allows residents to indicate which Town services they consider most important. The feedback will help municipal staff and council better understand community priorities as they prepare the 2027 budget.

Residents will have additional opportunities to provide input, including a public information session scheduled for Nov. 3. Feedback will also be accepted by email and through community events held throughout the consultation period.

Construction is about to begin on a new permanent Beaver River Bridge east of Beaverton. The Region of Durham says the work will be done in stages as the new bridge is built.

Traffic will continue moving in both directions for most of the project. Drivers are being reminded to slow down and follow the posted 40 km/h speed limit through the construction area.

The new bridge is expected to be completed in 2027. Drivers are encouraged to use caution and watch for construction crews and changing traffic conditions.

Innisfil Fire and Rescue is the first fire service in Canada to add an epinephrine nasal spray to its medical kits. The spray, called neffy, can be used to treat people experiencing a severe allergic reaction.

The nasal spray gives firefighters another option for providing quick treatment, alongside the EpiPen. It can be given without an injection, which officials say could be helpful during an emergency.

The department has trained 60 career and volunteer firefighters to use the spray. Officials say having another way to deliver epinephrine could help save valuable time when responding to a serious allergic reaction.

People interested in running for municipal office in Georgina have until Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. to file their nomination papers for the 2026 municipal election.

Nominations are being accepted for mayor, regional councillor and five ward councillor positions, as well as local school board trustee positions. Candidates must file the required forms and supporting documents with the Town, and nominations are by appointment through the Clerk’s Division. 

The municipal election will be held on Oct. 26, 2026.The Town says people can find information about candidate requirements, the nomination process and third-party advertising on its website.

Construction is underway on Aurora’s new 4.4-kilometre multi-use path along Yonge Street. Crews are clearing the area and preparing the route between Bloomington Road and Industrial Parkway.

The path will provide a safer space for pedestrians, cyclists and other users, while connecting residents to trails, schools, businesses and the Aurora GO Station.

Work is expected to continue into late fall, with landscaping planned for spring 2027. Drivers should expect lane closures and delays in the area during construction.

York Regional Police are reminding pet owners never to leave animals unattended in hot vehicles after two small dogs were rescued from a car at a local mall. Officers smashed a window to reach the dogs after members of the public called 9-1-1.

The dogs are expected to be OK. Police say the vehicle’s owner was facing two criminal charges and six by-law charges and received a lifetime ban from the mall.

Police warn that temperatures inside vehicles can become dangerously hot within minutes. They say leaving a window cracked or water in the car is not enough. Anyone who sees a pet trapped in a hot vehicle should call 9-1-1.

Jackson’s Point was filled with colour and creativity yesterday as the annual Painted Perch Challenge brought local artists and community members together for another celebration of art and the Lake Simcoe community. The event featured an impressive collection of hand-painted fish, with artists putting their own creative spin on the iconic perch.

The competition showcased the incredible talent of the participating artists. Many aspiring artists contributed their artwork to the event. The painted fish were on display for visitors to enjoy, with the finished creations offering a colourful and unique celebration of the area’s connection to Lake Simcoe.

The event also drew families and art enthusiasts, with some young participants proudly taking part in the challenge. Organizers are already looking ahead to next year, thanking the artists and community for their support and saying they look forward to seeing everyone again for the next Painted Perch Challenge. The painted fish and ribbons are available for pickup through the Art Gallery of Georgina.

The 169th Sutton Fair and Horse Show is in full swing this weekend, with large crowds turning out Thursday and Friday to enjoy one of the region’s longest-running summer traditions. The weather cooperated for the first two days, providing ideal conditions for visitors to take in the midway, agricultural displays, entertainment and the many events taking place throughout the fairgrounds.

The Sutton Fair continues today with another full schedule of activities for visitors of all ages. The annual event brings together the agricultural community, local families, exhibitors and visitors from across the region, with horse and livestock events, demonstrations, food vendors, exhibits and plenty of midway entertainment. The strong turnout so far has helped create a lively atmosphere throughout the fairgrounds.

Organizers are encouraging residents and visitors to make the most of the 169th Sutton Fair and Horse Show. With activities continuing throughout the day, fairgoers will get another opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and traditions that have made the Sutton Fair a summer fixture in the community for nearly 170 years.

York Region is reminding drivers to watch for cyclists as more people take to the roads during the summer months.

Motorists are asked to leave at least one metre of space when passing cyclists, check for bikes before opening their doors, and use extra caution at intersections.

Officials say small steps like these can help prevent collisions and keep everyone safer while sharing the road.

Hundreds of runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters took part in the annual York Regional Police charity run, held in honour of Detective Constable Rob Plunkett.

Together, they raised $35,000 for Special Olympics Ontario. The money will help support athletes as they travel to the Special Olympics National Games in Medicine Hat next week.

Organizers say they’re grateful for the strong community support and everyone who took part. They’re already looking forward to building on this year’s success at next year’s event.

The Sutton Fair is back this weekend at the Georgina Fairgrounds, and Mayor Margaret Quirk joined Dan Pollard for the Morning Drive with Dan to remind drivers to plan ahead before heading to the fair. With construction continuing on High Street, the Town has made some temporary traffic changes to help keep vehicles moving.

Temporary traffic lights are now in place at Black River Road and Queen Street to improve traffic flow and reduce delays. The Town says staff will continue to monitor traffic throughout the weekend, and paid-duty officers will be on hand during the busy evening hours to help direct vehicles leaving the fair.

The Redbirds Lacrosse Club U19 girls team has qualified for the Ontario Women’s Field Lacrosse U19 A Provincial Championships after winning its final regular-season game against the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks.

The provincial tournament will take place in Oakville from Aug. 7 to 9 and will bring together the top U19 girls field lacrosse teams from across Ontario. The Redbirds earned their place after a strong regular season.

Club officials say the team has exceeded expectations this year and is looking to build on last season’s silver-medal finish in the B Division. The Redbirds will be aiming for another strong showing as they compete against the province’s best teams.

The Ontario Provincial Police laid 42 charges and issued 56 warnings during marine and off-road vehicle patrols over the long weekend. Officers say alcohol-related offences and lifejacket violations accounted for more than half of the charges.

Police also report that two drivers received seven-day licence suspensions as part of impaired operation investigations. The enforcement campaign focused on promoting safe boating and off-road vehicle use during one of the busiest weekends of the summer.

The OPP is reminding boaters and off-road vehicle riders to stay sober, wear a properly fitted lifejacket, and follow safety rules. Officers say enforcement efforts will continue throughout the summer to help keep waterways and trails safe.

Residents in Georgina are being encouraged to check that they are included on Ontario’s Voters’ List ahead of the 2026 municipal election. Officials say some voter records may have been affected when responsibility for the list transferred from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) to Elections Ontario in 2024.

Even residents who voted in previous municipal elections are encouraged to verify that their information is correct. Checking voter information now can help prevent issues closer to election day.

Officials say confirming or updating voter information early will help ensure residents receive important election materials by mail and avoid unnecessary delays when it’s time to vote.

The Georgina Community Food Pantry is launching a mobile food pantry this winter to make it easier for people in Keswick and Pefferlaw to access food. The new service will bring groceries to community pick-up locations for residents who have difficulty travelling to the pantry in Sutton.

The mobile pantry is intended to improve access for people who may face transportation or other challenges getting to the current location. Community pick-up sites will be selected based on local needs.

Residents are invited to complete an anonymous survey by Aug. 31 to help determine the best locations for the new service. Feedback will help the pantry decide where the mobile food pick-up sites should be located.

The Lake Simcoe Water Soldier Working Group is asking residents and visitors to help stop the spread of water soldier, an invasive aquatic plant found in local waterways. The plant can make swimming, boating, and fishing more difficult, and its sharp leaves can cause cuts.

The group is encouraging people to clean, drain, and dry their boats and equipment before entering or leaving the water. These simple steps can help keep the plant from spreading to new areas.

Residents are also asked to report any suspected sightings of water soldier outside of Cook’s Bay. Reporting new locations can help crews respond quickly and protect Lake Simcoe.

The Georgina Leisure Pool is inviting residents to take part in its Adapted Sensory Swim program, offered every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The drop-in swim is designed to provide a quieter, more comfortable environment for individuals with sensory sensitivities.

To help create a calming atmosphere, no music is played during the sessions. The program offers participants an opportunity to enjoy the pool in a setting with fewer sensory distractions while taking part in recreational swimming.

Participants must attend with a parent, guardian, or support worker. One caregiver is admitted free with each participant, while regular wristband and aquatics admission policies remain in effect for all other attendees.

Convertus Group has secured $135 million in financing for its biofuel facility currently under construction in East Gwillimbury. The project is expected to open in early 2027 and will support the processing of organic waste from across York Region.

Once operating, the facility will convert organic waste into renewable natural gas, low-carbon fertilizer and food-grade carbon dioxide. The company says the plant will help reduce waste while producing renewable energy and other useful products.

Convertus says construction remains on schedule, with commissioning expected to begin later this year. The company expects the facility to be fully operational in early 2027.

The Town of Newmarket has officially opened the new Mulock Drive Multi-Use Path, a 6.3-kilometre trail stretching from Bathurst Street to Harry Walker Parkway. The new path provides a continuous route for residents travelling across town.

The project was completed at a cost of $3.45 million, well below the original estimated budget of $7.6 million. Town officials say the savings were achieved while delivering the full scope of the project.

The multi-use path is designed for people walking, cycling, jogging and using mobility devices. Officials say it will improve connections throughout the community and provide a safer, more accessible way for residents to get around.

A new community survey is helping shape how the South Simcoe Police Service will serve Bradford West Gwillimbury and Innisfil over the next four years. Residents were asked about community safety, police services and local programs as part of the development of the service’s 2026–2029 strategic plan.

Police say the feedback will help them better understand what is most important to the communities they serve. The survey results will be used to help set priorities and guide future planning.

The South Simcoe Police Service says the full survey report will be released to the public in the coming weeks. The report will provide more details about what residents had to say and how that feedback will help shape the new strategic plan.

Ontario Provincial Police have identified the victim in a fatal shooting in Midland as 18-year-old Tryce James of Etobicoke. The death is now being investigated as a homicide following the shooting at an apartment complex on King Street on the evening of Friday, July 31. Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay OPP responded to reports of gunshots shortly after 8:00 p.m. and located the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and say there is no indication of a broader threat to public safety. Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as officers continue gathering evidence and conducting interviews.

The Southern Georgian Bay OPP Crime Unit is leading the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, the OPP Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit and Forensic Identification Services. Police are asking anyone with information, or anyone with dashcam, surveillance or cellphone video related to the incident, to contact the Southern Georgian Bay OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and reference occurrence number E261096322. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

The Provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) Squad is asking for the public’s help in locating a federal offender who is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for allegedly breaching the conditions of his statutory release. Police are searching for 55-year-old Rejean Hermel Perron, who is currently serving a six-month and 27-day sentence.

Perron is serving his sentence for three counts of breaching a Long-Term Supervision Order and one count of obstructing a peace officer. He is described as a white male, approximately 5-foot-1 (157 cm) tall, weighing about 121 pounds (55 kg), with brown hair and blue eyes.

Investigators say Perron is known to frequent the Greater Toronto Area, Kingston, Ottawa and Timmins. Anyone who sees him or has information about his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and instead contact the Provincial R.O.P.E. Squad at 416-808-5900 or toll-free at 1-866-870-7673 (ROPE). Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be stepping up traffic enforcement across Central Region during the Civic Holiday long weekend, with officers taking to both the roads and the skies in an effort to reduce dangerous driving. The enhanced enforcement campaign runs from July 30 to August 2 and includes support from the OPP Airplane Enforcement Program, which allows officers to identify traffic violations from the air and direct ground units to intercept offending drivers.

The initiative comes as the OPP continues to see an increase in dangerous and high-risk driving across Ontario. So far this year, 33 fatal collisions on Central Region OPP-patrolled highways have claimed 37 lives. Police say enforcement efforts will focus on the behaviours most commonly linked to fatal crashes, including speeding, aggressive driving, impaired driving and failing to wear a seat belt.

During the long weekend, the Airplane Enforcement Program will monitor highways and roadways in Peterborough, the City of Kawartha Lakes, Dufferin County, Caledon, Orillia and Northumberland County. A spotter aboard the aircraft will watch for unsafe driving behaviours and relay information to officers on the ground. The OPP is reminding motorists that every decision made behind the wheel affects the safety of everyone on the road and is urging drivers to obey speed limits, avoid aggressive driving, wear seat belts and never drive while impaired.
