Brock Township Council has approved a 10-year plan to guide future improvements at MacLeod Park in Cannington. The master plan outlines upgrades that will be completed in three phases, although no cost estimates have been included at this stage.

The proposed improvements include new sports courts, a splash pad, lighting and other park enhancements. Walking paths, public washrooms and a pump track have been identified as the highest priorities, while some projects, including a proposed dog park, could be limited by Source Water Protection regulations.

Work is already underway on several improvements at the park, including upgrades to the pedestrian bridge, new signage and the construction of a new basketball court. Township officials say the long-term plan will help guide future investments as funding becomes available.

Southlake Health is inviting residents to a community town hall on Aug. 11 to learn more about its plans for the future of health care in the region. The event will give the public an opportunity to hear directly from hospital leaders and ask questions about upcoming projects.

The session will include updates on plans for a new hospital site in East Gwillimbury, along with improvements planned for the existing Davis Drive hospital in Newmarket. Southlake Health says the projects are intended to help meet the needs of the region’s growing population and improve access to care.

The town hall will take place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall. Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about the plans, share feedback and ask questions about the future of health care in the community.

York Region says recent high winds and wave activity on Lake Simcoe are responsible for the cloudy water seen near Willow Wharf Park. According to the region, the rough conditions have stirred up naturally occurring clay and sand from the lakebed, creating the temporary change in water clarity.

Officials say no in-water construction has taken place over the past three days because weather conditions have prevented that work from moving ahead. They add the water is expected to clear naturally as winds ease and lake conditions improve.

The region also says environmental protection measures remain in place at the site and that the temporary cloudiness is not expected to have any impact on Lake Simcoe’s ecosystem. Officials will continue to monitor conditions as the weather improves.

Drivers in Bradford West Gwillimbury will soon see red-light cameras installed at some of the town’s busiest intersections after the province approved the municipality’s automated enforcement program.

Eight cameras will be installed at five intersections over the coming weeks, with enforcement expected to begin in September. The cameras are intended to improve road safety by deterring drivers from running red lights, a leading cause of serious intersection collisions.

Motorists caught running a red light by the cameras will face fines starting at more than $300. The town says the program is part of its ongoing efforts to make local roads safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

The Township of Brock says the $10.2-million renovation of Sunderland Memorial Arena is expected to be substantially complete by the end of October, marking a major milestone in the long-running project.

The scope of the renovation has expanded to include several additional upgrades, including structural improvements, upgrades to the building’s water and sewage systems, a new roof, and new heating and ventilation equipment. The work is intended to modernize the facility and improve its long-term reliability.

Township staff will spend November preparing the arena for reopening, with local user groups expected to return to the ice beginning Dec. 7. Details about a community opening celebration are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Residents will have a chance to give broken household items a second life at the next Repair Café in Newmarket. The free community event takes place Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Newmarket Public Library.

A 41-year-old Bradford man is facing stunt driving charges after South Simcoe Police say he was caught travelling 93 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone on 10th Line in Innisfil on Monday morning. Officers allege two young children were riding in the back seat at the time of the stop.

Police suspended the driver’s licence for 30 days and impounded the vehicle for 14 days, as required under Ontario’s stunt driving laws. Officers say they have seen an increase in speeding on 10th Line as nearby construction projects divert more traffic onto local roads.

South Simcoe Police are reminding motorists to slow down and drive safely, noting that neighbourhood streets are shared by pedestrians, cyclists and children.

A 23-year-old Aurora man is facing charges after police say he drove a vehicle through a walking path, playground and splash pad at Rotary Park in Ajax while the area was busy with pedestrians and children.

According to Durham Regional Police, officers attempted to stop the vehicle twice, but the driver allegedly fled both times. Police say the vehicle was later involved in a collision with an unrelated SUV during another attempted traffic stop.

No injuries were reported. Police have charged Ismail Abrahimzada with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for police.

Residents have until Aug. 12 to check, update or add their name to the voters list for the 2026 municipal election using Elections Ontario’s online voter registration tool. Keeping voter information current helps ensure residents are ready to cast a ballot when voting takes place this fall.

York Regional Police has officially welcomed Ahmad Salhia as its newest deputy chief following a swearing-in ceremony attended by family, friends, mentors, police leaders, and community members.

Police say Salhia brings years of operational experience, a strong work ethic, and an innovative approach to policing. They say his leadership will help strengthen the service and support its commitment to public safety.

York Regional Police says it is confident Salhia will continue to help keep York Region safe while building trust and strong relationships with the community in his new role.

York Region Public Health is advising residents not to swim at four beaches in Georgina after water tests found elevated levels of E. coli bacteria. The affected beaches are Claredon Beach Park, Joy Marritt Parkette, Riverview Park, and Corner Park.

Health officials say the advisory will remain in place until follow-up testing shows the water is safe for swimming. They continue to monitor water quality at local beaches throughout the summer.

Public health says all other monitored beaches in York Region are currently considered safe for swimming. Residents are encouraged to check for the latest beach water quality updates before heading to the beach.

York Regional Police Detective Kevin Selwood joined Dan Pollard on the Morning Drive to talk about the annual Race for Plunkett. The event is held each year in memory of Detective Constable Rob Plunkett and raises money to support Special Olympics athletes.

Detective Selwood spoke about how the event brings police officers and the community together for a great cause. It is a chance to honour Rob Plunkett’s memory while helping Special Olympics athletes reach their goals.

York Region and Ornge have signed a permanent agreement to continue using the emergency air ambulance helipad at the York Region Paramedic Services site in East Gwillimbury. The helipad has been operating since July 2024 and provides a dedicated landing site for patients who need urgent transport to hospital.

Since opening, the helipad has been used for more than 90 air ambulance flights after replacing the former landing site at Buttonville Airport. Officials say it has helped ensure patients can be moved quickly when every minute counts.

York Region says the long-term agreement will keep the helipad available for emergency medical flights and help patients reach specialized hospitals faster. Officials say the partnership will continue to support timely emergency care for residents across the region.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding residents to take precautions against mosquito bites as West Nile virus continues to circulate throughout the region during the summer months. Public health officials say reducing exposure to mosquitoes is the best way to lower the risk of infection during peak mosquito season.

Residents are encouraged to use insect repellent when spending time outdoors, wear long sleeves and pants when possible, remove standing water around their homes where mosquitoes can breed, and ensure window and door screens are in good repair to help keep insects outside.

While most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, the health unit says some individuals can become seriously ill. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, a severe headache, confusion or other signs of illness after a mosquito bite is encouraged to seek medical attention promptly.

Construction is underway on Georgian College’s new downtown Barrie campus, marking the next step in the school’s expansion into the city’s core. Crews are transforming the space at 55 Mulcaster St. into a modern learning hub that will eventually welcome students studying design, visual arts and emerging technologies.

The downtown campus is expected to accommodate up to 1,000 students once it is fully operational. The project will open in phases, with the first students expected to begin using the new facilities in the winter of 2027.

College officials say the new campus will provide more hands-on learning opportunities in specialized programs while strengthening connections with the community. They also expect the influx of students to bring added activity and support local businesses in downtown Barrie as the campus becomes established.

South Simcoe Police are warning residents about a phone scam after a local victim was tricked by someone pretending to be from Rogers. Police say the victim received a spoofed phone call offering a free iPad.

Police say the scammers used the victim’s account to order the iPad and had it delivered to the victim’s home. They then picked up the package, leaving the victim responsible for the charges.

Residents are reminded to be careful with unexpected calls offering free products or prizes. Police say it’s always best to contact a company directly to confirm the offer and never share personal information or give delivered packages to someone you don’t know.

York Regional Police are investigating after a home in Stouffville was struck by gunfire early Thursday morning. Officers responded to the area of Flute Street near Noah’s Farm Trail after reports that several shots had been fired.

Police say the shots were fired from a grey vehicle, which left the area before officers arrived. A second-floor window of the home was damaged, but no injuries were reported.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information, surveillance video or dashcam footage from the area to contact York Regional Police as the investigation continues.

An electrical fire in the basement of a home on Vandorf Sideroad in Aurora brought a large emergency response Wednesday evening. Firefighters arrived quickly and were able to get the fire under control.

Because there were no fire hydrants in the rural area, crews used tanker trucks to bring water to the scene. The fire was put out without any injuries being reported.

Fire officials say the fire was accidental and was caused by an electrical issue. They are reminding homeowners to keep their electrical systems well maintained to help prevent fires.

The Town of Newmarket is reminding residents that e-scooters are not permitted on municipal property because it has not opted into Ontario’s e-scooter pilot program. The reminder comes as concerns continue to grow over speeding riders and an increase ine-scooter-related injuries across the province.

Town officials say their current approach is focused on education rather than enforcement, while York Regional Police are responsible for enforcing rules governing e-scooter use on roads and sidewalks. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the existing regulations before using an e-scooter.

The town is currently reviewing its micromobility regulations and plans to introduce updated rules, along with enhanced education and enforcement measures, by next summer. Officials say the review is intended to improve safety while addressing the growing use of alternative transportation options.

Three Aurora residents are among six people facing multiple drug and firearms charges following a York Regional Police investigation into alleged cocaine trafficking across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area. The investigation, dubbed Project Blade, focused on the alleged distribution of cocaine within the region.

On July 16, officers executed search warrants at homes in Aurora, Vaughan and Toronto, where they seized suspected cocaine, firearms, cash, vehicles and other items believed to be connected to the investigation. Police say the accused now face a number of charges related to drug trafficking and firearms offences.

The investigation remains ongoing, and York Regional Police are asking anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Police have not released additional details about the investigation at this time.

National Drowning Prevention Week is underway, with family-friendly public swims and water safety activities taking place at the Georgina Leisure Pool and the Multi-Use Recreation Complex (MURC). The annual campaign highlights the importance of water safety and encourages residents of all ages to build skills that can help prevent drowning.

Throughout the week, visitors can take part in a variety of interactive activities, including a water safety scavenger hunt, trivia, a pledge wall, and giveaways. Two 15-year-olds are facing several charges after they were allegedly caught riding electric motorbikes without licence plates on a road in Collingwood.

Police say neither teen had a driver’s licence, and the electric motorbikes were also allegedly unregistered and uninsured. As a result, both youths are facing multiple charges under provincial traffic laws.

The OPP is reminding parents and young riders that electric motorcycles and dirt bikes are subject to the same rules as gas-powered vehicles. Police say the vehicles must be properly registered, insured and operated by licensed drivers, and cannot be driven on public roads by anyone under the age of 16.

Drainage improvement work is underway on Alice Avenue between Cedar Grove Road and Metro Road, as well as on Boyers Road north of Metro Road, as the Town of Georgina works to improve water flow and help reduce flooding in the area.

The project includes replacing culverts and repairing roadside ditches based on recommendations from a 2022 drainage study. The upgrades are designed to improve drainage and support the long-term performance of the road network.

Construction is expected to continue through the fall. Residents can expect temporary driveway disruptions and traffic impacts while the work is underway, and motorists are encouraged to use caution and follow posted signage in the construction zone.

Hockey fans are invited to celebrate Sean Walker Day in Georgina on Wednesday, Aug. 5, as Carolina Hurricanes defenceman and Keswick native Sean Walker brings theStanley Cup home for a special community celebration.

Some York Region residents who requested a second blue recycling bin will begin receiving them starting the week of Aug. 3. The extra bins are being delivered to households that need more space for recycling.

The additional bins are being provided after the switch to bi-weekly recycling collection under Ontario’s producer-led recycling program. The goal is to help households manage the longer time between collections.

Residents who missed the deadline for the August delivery can still apply for a second blue bin. Approved requests will be included in a future distribution.

Unionized workers at the Newmarket Public Library have reached a tentative contract agreement with the library, bringing months of labour negotiations closer to an end. The agreement was reached on July 17 but still needs to be approved by the 31 members of CUPE Local 905.

During negotiations, workers raised concerns about wages, staffing levels and workplace safety. Earlier this month, they held an information picket outside the library to highlight those issues while bargaining continued.

The tentative agreement will now be presented to union members for a ratification vote. More details about the contract are expected after the voting process is complete.

The Town of Georgina is encouraging rural property owners to apply for a Farm 911 civic address. The program helps emergency crews find farm entrances more quickly when they are responding to a call.

Eligible farm properties receive a yellow Farm 911 sign that clearly marks the entrance to the property. The signs can help police, firefighters and paramedics get to the right location faster, especially in rural areas.

The Farm 911 program is free to apply for. The signs are only used to help emergency responders find farm entrances and are not used as mailing addresses. The Town is encouraging eligible property owners to sign up.

Model homes at Aurora’s new Monteverdi Estates development will open this week. The project will bring 50 luxury estate homes to the area near Yonge Street and Bloomington Road.

The developer says the new homes are designed to fit in with the surrounding neighbourhood. However, some critics argue that luxury developments do little to address the growing need for more affordable housing in the community.

The opening comes as the Greater Toronto Area housing market continues to recover after several challenging years. The development is one of several new residential projects moving ahead across York Region.

The Town of Newmarket is encouraging more residents to use their green bins through a neighbourhood outreach campaign running from July 20 to Aug. 14. During the campaign, town staff will visit randomly selected homes to share information about the green bin program and answer questions.

Residents can also purchase green bins and kitchen catchers at discounted prices while the campaign is underway. The town hopes the initiative will encourage more households to divert food waste from landfill.

As part of the campaign, residents are invited to complete a waste management survey by Aug. 2. Those who take part will be entered into a draw for one of three $50 gift cards to a local Newmarket business.

It’s yard waste collection week in Georgina, with bi-weekly pickup continuing through the week of Dec. 7. Residents still have several collection weeks remaining before the seasonal program ends.

There is no limit to the amount of yard waste that can be set out, as long as it is prepared properly. Yard waste should be placed in Kraft paper bags or clearly labelled containers.

Brush must be tied into bundles no longer than 90 centimetres and weighing no more than 22 kilograms. Following these guidelines will help ensure materials are collected on schedule.

York Regional Police is inviting families to book free child car seat inspection clinics to help ensure young passengers are travelling safely.

The inspections are conducted by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, who will check that car seats are properly installed and appropriate for each child. Appointments are required, and each inspection takes approximately one hour per car seat. 

A refundable $25 deposit is required to reserve an appointment. York Regional Police says deposits will be returned to those who attend their scheduled inspection, while deposits for missed appointments will be donated to a York Regional Police charity.

A youth riding an e-bike was taken to hospital with minor injuries following a collision with a vehicle on Innisfil Beach Road Wednesday afternoon.

According to South Simcoe Police, the crash occurred when a vehicle was turning into a busy parking lot and the e-bike collided with it. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and the rider was transported to hospital for treatment.

Police say a 46-year-old Innisfil woman has been charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act. The investigation into the collision has been completed.

Residents will have an opportunity to declutter their homes and help keep usable items out of the landfill when Georgina’s next Curbside Giveaway Day takes place on Saturday, July 25.

The community event allows residents to place unwanted household items at the curb free of charge between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Neighbors are welcome to browse and take any items they can use, giving pre-loved belongings a second life while reducing waste.

The Town reminds residents that any items left at the curb must be removed by 5 p.m. if they have not been claimed. Household goods may only be placed at the curb on designated Curbside Giveaway Days, and participants are encouraged to ensure items are clean, safe and suitable for reuse.

York Region Public Health is advising residents not to swim at Claredon Beach Park, Riverview Park and Jackson’s Point Harbour/Bonnie Park after elevated levels of E. coli bacteria were found in the water during routine testing.

Swimming in water with high bacteria levels can increase the risk of illness and may cause skin, eye and stomach infections. Health officials are encouraging residents to avoid entering the water at the affected beaches until testing confirms it is safe to swim again.

All other York Region beaches that were tested are currently considered safe for swimming. Residents are encouraged to check the latest beach water quality updates before heading to the waterfront, as conditions can change throughout the summer.

Georgina is under a Yellow-level Heat Warning as hot weather continues across York Region this week, while wildfire smoke has also affected air quality across the region. Smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario turned the sky over York Region yellow and orange on July 15, prompting an orange-level air quality warning from health officials.

The Town is reminding residents to stay cool and hydrated by using cooling centres, visiting splash pads, or spending time at local beaches and waterfront parks. At the same time, health officials are advising people to stay indoors when possible or avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially children, seniors, and those with heart or lung conditions.

While the heat is expected to continue through the week, air quality is forecast to improve by Friday. Officials continue to encourage everyone to take extra precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and reduce exposure to poor air quality. Residents with pets are advised to keep them inside as much as possible and keep any dog walks 10 minutes or less.

Southlake Health has renamed the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre as the Magna Regional Cancer Centre. The change follows Frank Stronach’s sexual assault conviction.

Magna International requested the name change, saying the new name better reflects the company’s support for the cancer centre and its commitment to patient care.

The renaming comes after Newmarket, Aurora and several other organizations removed Stronach’s name from local facilities, awards and honours following his conviction.

York Region is making school zones safer this summer by adding new road markings at nine schools, with one location in each local municipality. The new markings are designed to help slow traffic and make school zones more visible to drivers.

The work will take place overnight during July and August to help reduce traffic disruptions. Crews will install the new pavement markings before students return to school in September.

The project is part of York Region’s Vision Zero road safety plan, which aims to reduce traffic-related injuries and make roads safer for everyone.

The Town of Georgina is now accepting nominations for the 2026 Volunteer Award of Merit. The award recognizes individuals, teams, groups and businesses that make a positive difference in the community through volunteer service.

Health experts are warning Canadians to protect themselves from ticks as the country experiences a record year for tick activity. Along with Lyme disease, experts say another tick-borne illness called anaplasmosis is becoming more common.

Symptoms of anaplasmosis can include fever, headache, weakness, muscle aches, and stomach problems. Health experts say early treatment with antibiotics can help prevent serious complications.

People spending time outdoors are encouraged to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas, and check themselves, children, and pets for ticks after being outside. Removing a tick as soon as possible can help reduce the risk of illness.

Police are reminding residents to stay alert following a rise in distraction thefts, where suspects use friendly conversations or unexpected interactions to steal valuables. Officers say thieves may offer gifts, jewelry, or other items as a way to distract people before taking cash, wallets, purses, or other belongings.

Residents are encouraged to be cautious when approached by strangers and to avoid accepting gifts or jewelry from people they do not know. Police also recommend keeping purses, wallets, and other valuables secure and out of sight.

Police are also reminding shoppers to take expensive purchases home as soon as possible instead of leaving them unattended in a vehicle. Anyone who sees suspicious activity or believes they have been targeted is encouraged to contact police.

The Town is looking for cultural groups, performers, artists, food vendors, businesses, and community organizations to take part in the 2026 Cultural Festival at the ROC Chalet. Applications are open until Aug. 13 for those interested in participating in the annual event.

The festival will begin on Sept. 18 with the rescheduled Canada Day fireworks at 8 p.m. The evening will also include food vendors, live music, and family activities.

The celebration continues on Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy cultural performances, food, and displays while learning more about the community’s many cultures.

York Regional Police has introduced Deputy Chief-Designate Ahmad Salhia, a longtime officer with extensive experience in policing, public service and community engagement.

Salhia most recently served as Superintendent of Executive Services. Before that, he was the commander of #4 District, where he oversaw policing operations in Vaughan and King.

In his new role, Salhia will lead the Community Safety Branch, which includes all five policing districts, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre and the Real Time Operations Centre.

Central York Fire Services has launched its 12th annual Stay Fire Smart campaign, with firefighters visiting homes in Newmarket and Aurora until Aug. 28 to help promote fire safety.

During the campaign, crews will offer free smoke and carbon monoxide alarm checks, replace batteries when needed, and install alarms for residents. Firefighters will also remind families to make sure they have working alarms and a home fire escape plan.

Since the campaign began in 2013, firefighters have visited more than 100,000 homes. Residents who are not reached during the campaign can also book a free home fire safety inspection through Central York Fire Services.

The Town of Georgina is reminding residents and visitors to help keep local beaches and waterfront parks clean and safe this summer. With more people enjoying the waterfront during the warmer months, the town is asking everyone to do their part.

Visitors are encouraged to throw out their garbage, respect the natural environment, and leave barbecues and other cooking devices at home. The town says these simple steps help keep parks clean and enjoyable for everyone.

York Regional Police are asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect following a jewelry theft in Newmarket.

Police say the incident happened on June 1 at a jewelry store near Yonge Street and Davis Drive. Investigators allege the suspect asked to try on a gold chain before running out of the store wearing the jewelry. He was last seen fleeing on foot along Davis Drive.

The suspect is described as a white male, about five-foot-nine with a medium build, short brown hair and a brown goatee. He was wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering, black pants, a black-and-white baseball cap and black-and-white shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact York Regional Police’s #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, extension 7142. Anonymous tips can also be provided through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

The York Catholic District School Board is projecting a $6.8-million deficit for the 2026-27 school year, an improvement from last year’s $9.3-million shortfall. The board remains under provincial financial supervision as it works to balance its budget.

To reduce costs, the board is planning staffing changes and other savings measures tied to declining student enrolment. Board officials say they will work to minimize the impact on students while addressing ongoing financial pressures.

Some education workers have criticized the planned cuts, saying they could reduce support for students with complex learning and mental health needs. The board says it remains committed to providing quality education while managing its finances responsibly.

Construction is now underway on the revitalization of Jackson’s Point Parkette. The project will transform the parkette into a more welcoming and accessible community space for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Town has thanked the Jackson’s Point BIA for its $15,000 contribution toward the project. The funding will help support the revitalization and enhance the parkette as a community gathering place.

York Regional Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect following a jewelry theft in Newmarket. Investigators say the incident happened on June 1 at a jewelry store near Yonge Street and Davis Drive.

Police say a man entered the store and asked to try on a gold chain. After putting it on, investigators allege the suspect ran from the store without paying, still wearing the necklace. Officers continue to investigate and are working to identify the individual involved.

Anyone with information is asked to contact York Regional Police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

Tree cleanup is continuing across Newmarket following last Friday’s severe storm, which damaged more than 200 Town-owned trees. The hardest-hit areas include the Yonge Street and Mulock Drive corridor, where crews have been working to remove fallen trees and storm debris.

Town officials say all reported road blockages have now been cleared, allowing traffic to move safely throughout the community. Crews are continuing to remove hazardous trees and hanging branches, including along local trails, with work expected to continue into next week.

The Town is thanking residents for their patience as cleanup efforts continue. Officials say crews are focused on public safety while working to restore access to parks, trails, and other affected areas as quickly as possible.

The Town of Georgina has officially opened a new live fire training tower designed to help firefighters strengthen their emergency response skills through realistic, hands-on training. The new facility will provide firefighters with opportunities to practice a wide range of fire and rescue scenarios in a controlled environment.

The project was supported by more than $550,000 in funding from the Ontario government. In addition to serving Georgina Fire and Rescue Services, the training tower will also be available for neighbouring fire departments, giving firefighters from across the region access to modern training resources.

Town officials say the investment will help ensure firefighters remain well prepared to respond to emergencies while enhancing public safety for residents. They add that the new facility is expected to support ongoing training and strengthen emergency response capabilities throughout the community.

Robin Mae of Keswick has turned the loss of her 21-year-old daughter into a mission to help others by launching The Sanctuary, a six-month pilot program in Georgina created in memory of her late daughter, Haley Mae. The free weekly drop-in program offers a welcoming space for people living with mental health challenges, addiction or other personal struggles to connect and find support.

Held each week at the Sutton Arena Hall and Georgina Ice Palace, The Sanctuary provides a safe, judgment-free environment where participants can talk openly, build connections and access peer support. Organizers say the program is intended to reduce isolation and remind people they do not have to face their challenges alone.

Since launching, attendance has continued to grow, and organizers are hopeful the pilot project will become a permanent community resource. They say the positive response has highlighted the need for accessible local support and hope The Sanctuary will continue to offer a place of hope, healing and connection for residents across Georgina.

A 21-year-old York Region man is among three people facing a combined 39 drug and weapons charges following an investigation by North Bay Police. The investigation led officers to arrest two suspects during a traffic stop near Bracebridge, while a third suspect was later taken into custody in York Region.

Police say the investigation resulted in the seizure of a handgun, ammunition, drugs with an estimated street value of more than $5,700, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The accused are each facing multiple charges in connection with the investigation. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Police say working together helps disrupt the movement of illegal drugs and firearms while improving public safety across communities.

South Simcoe police have charged an Innisfil man with stunt driving after he was allegedly caught travelling 104 km/h in a posted 60 km/h construction zone on Innisfil Beach Road. Officers say the incident highlights the importance of obeying reduced speed limits in areas where road work is underway.

The 47-year-old driver was issued a 30-day licence suspension, while the vehicle was impounded for 14 days, as required under Ontario’s stunt driving legislation. The charge has not been proven in court.

Police are reminding motorists to slow down and pay close attention to posted speed limits, particularly in construction zones where workers may be present. They say reduced speeds help protect both road crews and other drivers, while improving safety for everyone using the roadway.

Cleanup efforts are continuing in Aurora after Friday’s powerful storm caused widespread tree damage, power outages and road closures. Town crews are working to remove fallen trees, clear debris and repair damaged areas across the community.

Residents are reminded they are responsible for cleaning up debris from trees on their own property. The town is also asking people to stay out of parks and trails in northwest Aurora until they can be safely reopened.

Town officials say recovery will take time, with cleanup expected to continue for several months. Some restoration work is expected to carry over into next year.

The Ontario Provincial Police stepped up patrols on roads, trails and waterways during the busy Canada Day week to help keep people safe. Officers were out across the province watching for dangerous driving and other unsafe behaviour.

According to preliminary numbers, the OPP laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges. Speeding was the most common offence, while hundreds of charges were also issued for impaired driving, stunt driving, distracted driving, seatbelt violations and other traffic offences.

The OPP is thanking everyone who made safety a priority over the holiday week. Police are reminding drivers, boaters and trail users that making safe choices can help prevent serious crashes and save lives throughout the summer.

York Regional Police have withdrawn second-degree murder charges against two Aurora residents in connection with the June 10 death of 55-year-old David Gosse.

Police say Fabio and Maria Faganello are no longer accused after investigators found evidence they were not involved in the homicide. The charges against them have been withdrawn.

Four other people remain charged with second-degree murder in the case. They are scheduled to appear in court by video on July 16.

Drivers in Georgina can expect delays on Pefferlaw Road on Tuesday, July 7, as crews complete road maintenance work. The westbound lane between Lake Ridge Road and Griffith Avenue will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The closure is needed so crews can replace a weather monitoring sensor embedded in the road. Eastbound traffic will remain open during the work.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time or use an alternate route if possible. The work is expected to be completed by 3:30 p.m.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is using drones and artificial intelligence to help find and remove invasive plants in Lake Simcoe and other wetlands. The new BirdsEye tool quickly identifies invasive species, making it easier for crews to find and remove them.

The technology helps save time and reduces disturbance to sensitive wetland habitats. It also allows conservation crews to focus their work where it is needed most.

BirdsEye is currently being used to monitor European water chestnuts on Wolfe Island. The tool received an Innovation Award in 2025 for its development and is expected to support wetland conservation in more areas.

A marine search on Lake Simcoe ended tragically Wednesday evening after emergency crews recovered the body of a 38-year-old man who had reportedly been in distress while on a paddleboard near Mapleview Drive in the Town of Innisfil. South Simcoe Police say officers were called at approximately 5:10 p.m. on July 1 after receiving reports that the man was having difficulty on the water. At the time, weather conditions had deteriorated rapidly, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that created hazardous conditions on the lake.

At approximately 5:35 p.m., members of the South Simcoe Police Service Marine Unit, assisted by the York Regional Police Marine Unit, launched an extensive search operation. During the search, officers located the paddleboard and expanded their efforts around that area. The York Regional Police helicopter also joined the search, providing aerial support as crews continued to look for the missing individual.

At approximately 8 p.m., the York Regional Police helicopter located the body of the 38-year-old man in the water. Investigators later determined he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and the identity of the deceased will not be released out of respect for the family’s privacy. South Simcoe Police extended condolences to the man’s family, friends and loved ones following what they described as a tragic outcome.

Environment Canada has issued an Orange Heat Warning as a prolonged period of dangerous heat continues across the region. Officials say daytime temperatures are expected to reach between 31 and 34 degrees Celsius, with some areas potentially climbing as high as 37 degrees. Overnight temperatures are forecast to remain between 21 and 25 degrees, providing little relief from the heat.

Forecasters say the hottest conditions are expected today and Thursday, with the heat event continuing through Friday and potentially into the weekend in some areas. The combination of intense heat and humidity may also lead to worsening air quality conditions, with the Air Quality Health Index potentially reaching the high-risk category.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions and check on vulnerable people, including seniors, individuals living alone and others at greater risk of heat-related illness. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, seek air-conditioned spaces when possible and watch for signs of heat exhaustion such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and fatigue. Officials also remind the public never to leave children or pets unattended inside parked vehicles.
